A visit to the SIB of Eilean Mor 116m, P42 on the freshwater Loch Sionascaig.

Trip itinerary

Using two estate fishing boats with outboard motors already moored on the loch. Peterol and buoyancy aids will have to be carried from the cars to the loch, a walk of 600m.

As usual with SIB trips, they will be subject to weather conditions and skipper’s decisions on the day. There can be no guarantee the trip will take place or of landing on the island.

On a previous trip, the day was extended by visiting the nearby, mainland but remote Hump of Creag na h-Iolaire 230m, P102. This may be included if there is sufficient interest Or, more time could be spent exploring Eilean Mor and other islands on the Loch.

Initially, the trip is for 8 people. Though an additional sailing may be possible if demand is high.

Departure or meeting place

Parking areas at pt 105m, at start of track to Boat Bay, NC 093 152. This is on the road south of Lochinver to Stac Polly. Due to limited parking participants are encouraged to share cars to the start point. From the parking it is a 600m walk along a boggy path to Boat Bay, where the boats are located.

Challenges and competences needed

To land on the island you will need to be able to exit from and return to a boat onto a rocky coastline or stony beach.

Cost

£13 per person, plus £3 to hire a buoyancy vest if you don’t have one.
